Home Safety Checklist
As we age, the risk of falls and their associated injuries rises putting independence at risk. According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 95% of hip fractures are caused by a fall. After the experience, even if no injury occurs, people become fearful, creating a vicious cycle of inactivity and increased weakness. We’ve created a checklist, going room-to-room, to address fall prevention. Links include helpful products to ensure safety.
Bathroom
- Install grab bars on walls near toilet.
- Add raised toilet seat with balance bars.
- Install grab bars near bathtub and shower.
- All bathtub mats and shower mats must be slip resistant.
- Install non-skid adhesive textured strips on floor near shower entry
- Include shower stool or shower chair for comfort and balance safety.
Bedroom
- Table lamps and phones should be an easy reach from bed.
- If caregiver is on site, have a hands-free intercom or loud bell to ring for assistance
- Install an assist rail for getting in and out of bed (two styles shown).
- Install motion sensored or general nightlights that lead from bed to bathroom
- Install an adjustable bed frame for additional comfort and support (many sizes).
- Provide a table with wheels to move easily over bed.
Kitchen
- Food, dishes and cooking equipment should be stored on lower shelves.
- Step stools should have built in handrails for additional stability.
- Counter top toaster ovens are great options to avoid leaning inside of an oven.
Living Area
- Clear all pathways to allow smooth access for walkers or rollators.
- Consider combined light switch/ night lights.
- Consider motion activated night lights.
- Rugs must be securely tacked down.
- All furniture should have armrests or stand-assist safety handles.
Stairs
- Install handrails and/or grab bars near all steps.
- Install carpet runners, non-slip step treads or transparent grips.
