Patrick Glinski and Kaly Ryan of Vancouver-based Capella Design are proving that beauty and safety can seamlessly coexist with items like their contemporary picture frame grab bar. These innovations not only equip elders to be more self-sufficient—they also ease the burden on caregivers.

Glinski’s father battled Parkinson’s disease, and he saw first-hand how a home’s aesthetic could turn clinical. With a background in business
strategy consulting, Glinski has dedicated the past ten years into further understanding the various challenges of mobility, researching how people live and experience dozens of different chronic diseases. He and business partner Kaly Ryan, an award-winning furniture maker, take an activist- driven position to feel closer to their customers. Their goal is to make unique and beautiful products that people feel proud to own.

“Families experience illness together. But so often, when it comes to tools and interventions that are put in place, the focus is only on the individual experiencing the mobility issue,” said Glinski.”Shouldn’t everyone’s requirements be considered?”

And that is how he fell in love with the idea to support older adults with mobility challenges, by combining design and function. “Selora” is a
contemporary grab bar with solid, ADA-compliant construction. Glinski and Ryan took their inspiration from the objects people naturally have
in their homes, such as picture frames, mirrors and artwork, to recreate the traditional grab bar. The support provides up to 250 pounds of stability,
in hallways, stairways, entryways, or anywhere that a loved one might use some support.
